Dr Stanley Browne was a medical missionary and academic who was keen to transform the lives of people affected by leprosy. He once said that The Leprosy Mission’s “…greatest need today is the continuing believing prayer of God’s people. The vast and ever growing task undertaken by the Mission must be activated by prayer if it is to accomplish eternal as well as temporal good.” He wrote this in 1966 yet it’s just as relevant today. Helping people affected by leprosy is not possible without prayer. It’s an essential part of our ministry.
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us too, that God may open a door for our message.”
—Colossians 4:2-3
The Leprosy Mission has a rich history of prayer in support of its work. Its Irish founders prayed in the 19th Century. The first Australian supporters meeting at Holy Trinity Church in Melbourne prayed in the 20th. You and other supporters around Australia continue these prayers today. At The Leprosy Mission Australia office too, staff members meet together every workday morning to pray and read from the Bible. You are welcome to come and pray with us from Monday to Friday. Or if you’d like us to pray for you, please get in touch. We will pray for you and your needs.
You are invited to pray for people affected by leprosy and the work being carried out around the world. The last weekend of August (26th-27th) will be a National Prayer Weekend. It’s an annual opportunity to pray with thousands of other supporters around Australia. Gather with your friends or family, or retreat by yourself, to pray for people affected by leprosy and to wait in the healing presence of God. Prayer is not expensive. It’s not difficult. It costs a little bit of time but only what you are able to give. We have resources available to help you, including the National Prayer Weekend Guidebook. It contains an overview of some of your projects, up-to-date prayers and a Bible study on Jesus as The Vine.
To commit to prayer over this weekend, or receive your free copies of the National Prayer Weekend Guidebook call 1800 537 767 or complete our contact form.
