For years, Nagammal lived alone in a rough animal shed.

Because of her leprosy, her husband had left her. Her brother wanted little to do with her. Rejected and alone, she wondered where the gods were… had they abandoned her too?

“I was not well with all these ulcers (from leprosy). Before I was a Christian I felt frustrated with life and didn’t like worshipping the gods, for I felt they were not helping me at all!”

But thanks to supporters like you, Nagammal knows what the love of God is like.

She felt God’s love when Leprosy Mission workers gently washed and dressed the terrible ulcers on her leprosy-affected feet. She saw His love when she had reconstructive surgery at a Leprosy Mission hospital so she can now use her hand again to pick things up. She saw Jesus in the workers’ hands that built a new home for her through support from The Leprosy Mission– along with a ramp for a new wheelchair.

Nagammal is a faithful believer in Jesus “I now pray to Jesus – two or three times a day. I think about Jesus when I go to sleep. Sometimes I tell Him when I am not feeling well. I pray for my neighbours, the hospital, the doctors and nurses. I know He is a God who helps us. I know He will help not only me, but others also… Now, because of my transformation many people are asking me to pray for them…”

She loves fellowshipping with other believers… like The Leprosy Mission Australia supporters Maria and Joe Bast. The couple visited India recently and were delighted to meet with her while they were there.

For Nagammal, meeting Maria reminded her of a dream she had when she felt that everyone had deserted her and she was completely alone.

“In my dream I saw a lady, like Maria Bast, all dressed in white, standing by my bed. She told me to go to church. It was two o’clock in the morning. I woke up, had a bath and (that’s when) I decided I was going to worship Jesus only.

Maria says it’s a great comfort for Nagammal to know there are people like you on the other side of the world who care about her and others like her.

“As Mother Teresa once said, ‘The biggest disease in the world is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but being unwanted.’”

Nagammal knows what it’s like to be unwanted… and now she knows what it’s like to be loved by God and by others. Thanks to you!
